Ī testimony is but a collection of whisperings of the Spirit witnessing the correctness of one principle and then another. It prepares emotions for response to promptings of the Holy Spirit. It is edifying and conducive to understanding. Scott, especially sacred music, makes spiritual things more understandable. The same part of the brain that responds to aesthetic beauty also responds to spiritual experiences. īeautiful art and music open the mind to spiritual feelings, and help condition the heart to recognize truth. ![]() Once you know the songs, they can be with you always (like good friends) to help you make right choices and be happy. The illustrations will also help you see what the songs teach. The melody of a song helps you remember the words and also brings the feeling of the song to your heart. You will remember more easily what you have learned when you sing about it. You can learn about the gospel in this way, and your testimony will grow as you learn. The Holy Ghost gives you warm feelings to help you understand that the words and messages in the songs are true. That spirit helps us feel more like our Father in Heaven as we learn the songs that were prepared to strengthen this generation. One of the rewards of the assignment was to have contact with exceptional composers and authors. ![]() Heavenly Father does bless us in natural ways as we serve in the Church. If I had not moved, the papers would have been strewn on the wet street. Just after I pulled into the right lane, a car skidded into the back of the car where I had been. Then I felt very strongly that I should move, and I did. Moving up two car lengths won’t make much difference. I thought to myself, I am already going to be late. As I pulled up to a light on 700 East and 2700 South, I had the distinct impression that I should change lanes. This was a compilation of all the corrections from four proofreaders who were checking the music type. I had the only copy of the third cycle of the book on the back seat of my car. One day it was raining and I was rushing to a meeting at the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City. This was my schedule for many months and I was never sick. I often proofed from eleven at night until three in the morning in order to be prepared for meetings the next day. The Lord strengthened me as I worked on this book. I wondered what would happen to me as I worked with hundreds of songs! I learned that we are magnified as we make our humble attempt to do what we are asked. I had published a 32-page book of my own songs and became so consumed with the effort that I was overdrawn at the bank, missed voting in an election, and received my first traffic ticket. The enormous responsibility of preparing a new songbook made me both excited and nervous. Years later, those words gave me courage when I felt the weight of my assignment as music chairman for the Primary general board. I thought I would be an accompanist forever, and I was happy. I had never met John Ovard before he gave me my patriarchal blessing, yet he said, Never lose the virtues of your musical talent, for it will be the means of you doing much good in the Church.
